Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences

Career prospects

The PhD provides the necessary skills to carry out high-level research activities in public and private institutions, as well as in the liberal professions, contributing to the realisation of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and the European Research Area (ERA).

According to the ISTAT profiles, the PhD gives access to a group of intellectual, scientific and highly specialised professions (group 2), i.e. those requiring a high level of theoretical knowledge to analyse and present complex situations and problems in specific disciplinary fields, to define possible solutions and to take related decisions, such as:

  • 2.5 - Specialists in human, social, artistic and management sciences;
  • 2.6 - Specialists in education and research.

The scientific and professional skills acquired during the course will prepare students for a variety of careers, i.e. in the field of research, both in universities and in public and private institutions and/or centres, giving access to public calls for the award of scholarships, research contracts and grants, and to research posts. The programme also prepares for careers in public administrations and bodies, and for highly qualified and innovative roles in private companies, entrepreneurship and consultancy. It can also lead to university teaching, companies (in highly specialised sectors) and school teaching, being the title a privileged qualification for accessing calls and for inclusion on teachers' lists.

All four curricula lead to employment in academia and higher education, in school and out-of-school teaching, in archives and libraries, and in the custody, care and dissemination of sources heritage.
