Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences

Organisation

The P.h.D. course is a three-year programme that leads to an associate degree. Students must obtain a total of 180 ECTS (CFU) over the three-year period, divided annually into 60 CFU. Typically, 1 CFU of training activities is equivalent to 6 academic hours of teaching. PhD students are required to allocate their time and efforts equally between training and research activities. These activities allow students to acquire the necessary credits to complete the year. Please refer to the "Training Project" table (see: Acquisition of credits (ECTS) for more information.

Following admission to the course, each doctoral student is assigned a tutor and thesis supervisor by the Academic Board, who will act as research supervisor. The tutor may be assisted by another tutor in the case of interdisciplinary theses or theses requiring one or more support figures.

At the beginning of the year, each doctoral student will discuss with their supervisor the annual training plan, paying particular attention to the balance between research activities aimed at writing the thesis and training and teaching activities (carried out by the students themself). At the conclusion of the year, the student is required to submit a summary sheet (or report) of all activities carried out, including an analytical list of these activities and a summary of the research activity undertaken (methodology, objectives, results obtained, publications or articles submitted, etc.). The tutor then verifies that the annual activity submitted corresponds to the doctoral student's overall three-year plan of activities and signs the form. The form is then submitted by the student to the doctoral coordinator.

Once the annual final report has been received, the Teaching Board evaluates the activities carried out and issues a judgement of suitability, which is binding for admission to the following year. This judgement of suitability is formulated after a presentation by the doctoral candidate to the Research Unit to which the curriculum relates.

Once the doctoral candidate's annual report has been judged suitable, the Teaching Board decides on the recognition of CFUs for the annual activity carried out and forwards the relevant documentation to the PhD Office.

For any other organisational specific aspect, including the 'Summary of the specific activities carried out during the three-year period', divided by year, please refer to the relevant heading of the PhD Charter.
