Learning objectives

At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- Understand the characteristics of the main qualitative research methods in social sciences.
- Understand the different phases that make up a social research project.
- Evaluate the quality of qualitative research based on the use of discursive interviews.
- Perform text analysis using at least one analysis technique and conduct basic quantitative data analysis.

Course unit content

The course aims to present students with an overview of social research methods, including both the most commonly used methods and some innovative or less commonly used methods.

Most of the course will be dedicated to exploring qualitative methods, particularly discursive interviews. Basic guidelines will also be provided for constructing questionnaires and conducting basic quantitative data analysis.

Throughout the course, students will be guided through the various phases of a research project based on the use of discursive interviews, during collaborative and laboratory-style lessons. These phases include defining the research subject, formulating research questions, sampling, contacting interviewees, preparing the interview guide, conducting the interview, transcribing the interview, and analyzing the texts.

Teaching methods

The course uses and integrates the following teaching methods: lectures (with the aid of slides, texts, and raw empirical materials), interactive laboratory-style lessons, and collaborative sessions.

Assessment methods and criteria

For Attending Students:

For attending students, the exam consists of two parts. The final grade will be the average of the grades of the two parts.

The first part consists of preparing a group research report (3-4 people) that the authors will present in class during one of the last two lessons of the course. The evaluation of the research report will be published on Elly within two weeks after the end of the course. The description of the expected content of the research report will be made available on Elly before the start of the course.

The second part of the exam for attending students consists of a written exam. The exam will last 45 minutes with three open-ended questions and six multiple-choice questions. Up to 8 points can be awarded for each open-ended question; multiple-choice questions are worth 1 point each. The grade of the written exam will be communicated within two weeks following the exam, through publication on Elly. Please note that online registration for the exam is mandatory.


For Non-Attending Students:

For non-attending students, the exam will be written and will last approximately 2 hours, divided into two parts.

Approximately one hour will be dedicated to writing a short research project based on a theme to be chosen from three research themes. The description of the expected content of the short research project will be made available on Elly before the start of the course.

In the remaining time, students will answer, as in the second part of the exam for attending students, three open-ended questions and six multiple-choice questions. Up to 8 points can be awarded for each open-ended question; multiple-choice questions are worth 1 point each.

The final grade will be the average of the grades of the two parts (the short research project will also be graded out of thirty). The grade of the written exam will be communicated within two weeks following the exam, through publication on Elly. Please note that online registration for the exam is mandatory.

Other information

Lessons will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, starting from Tuesday, September 17, 2024, and concluding on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

On Tuesdays, lessons will be held from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm (2 hours).
On Wednesdays, lessons will take place from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm (4 hours).
