Learning objectives

The course aims to offer an overall analysis of the most important aspects of the language of journalism applied to the print media, television and the Web.
The students will learn to evaluate different languages in a critical way, applying theoretical notions to real cases.
The course intends to provide the main instruments for the construction of the various languages in question starting from a reflection about the nature of text in its different applications: will be explained in more detail the printed article, the television text, and the writing for online media, taking into account the connection of each of them with the social media.

Course unit content

The course is divided into three modules

1) The article of newspaper and the instruments for its analysis
2) The text for television and the construction of political talk shows
3) Radio, web and social media languages

At the end of the course the students will be able to recognize and analyze theories, languages, techniques and mechanisms that regulate print media, television and online journalism.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons; case studies.

The learning of journalistic language applied to the different media will happen through frontal lessons - enriched with support articles -, videos, case histories, and a follow-up bibliography.

Also various elements of each language will be enlarged: for the newspaper article – same as for the web one – substantial and formal analysis will be held about beginning, development and ending.
As for television language, the political talk show will be explored in all its elements: writing, subject, guests, films-reportages, editorial and interview.

At the end of the course there will be short hints about the contemporary context in the world of publishing industry and television in the new media era.

Oral exams.
