Integrated course unit module: NEUROSCIENCE OF SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS

Learning objectives

The course will allow the achievement of updated knowledge on the basic features of the mirror system, with a particular focus on
action understanding in monkeys and humans. In addition, the
implications of the mirror system for motor rehabilitation will be
addressed in depth

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the basic neural mechanisms underlying cortical motor cognitive functions

Course unit content

Remarks on the organization of the higher order motor functions.
The mirror neuron system in non-human primates: main features and
more detailed studies. The mirror system for action understanding in
humans. Coding of intention and mirror system. Plasticity of the motor and of the mirror neuron system. Rehabilitation therapies based on action observation in adults and children with motor deficits.

Full programme

Basic introduction on high order motor functions. The mirror neuron
system in non-human primates: main characteristics. Audio-visual mirror neurons. Decoding of action details by mirror neurons. Communicative mirror neurons.
The human mirror system. Coding of intention and mirror system. Mirror system plasticity in monkeys and humans. Imitation Rehabilitation therapies based on action observation and repetition in
adults and children
