Integrated course unit module: ANALISYS OF SUSTAINABILITY DIMENSIONS

Learning objectives

The course aims to achieve the following objectives:

a. Knowledge and understanding.
Students will have to know and understand the debate on food policies and the evolution of policies according to the different historical approaches, also considering the different trade-offs of the choices made. Students will need to understand why in different contexts and times, different policies are applied also in the light of the data provided and research methodologies developed at international and local levels.

b. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding.
Students are required to integrate the theoretical study of approaches and concepts related to food security and food policies, with the analysis of data from international and local databases. They are also required to be able to apply the theoretical concepts of food security and food policy to policy analysis.

c. Autonomy of judgement.
Students will develop a critical sense in judging the sustainability and resilience of policies also considering different country contexts.

d. Communication skills.
Students are required to actively participate in lectures, analysing data and policies and sharing the results to their colleagues through workshops and presentations.

e. Ability to learn.
The study method involves face-to-face lectures, group work, individual analysis and discussion of the issues addressed in class.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites are required. However, it is highly recommended to attend the module DATA MANAGEMENT FOR SUSTAINABILITY ANALYSIS

Course unit content

The course deals with food policies and the sustainable governance of the agri-food system. The goal of contemporary food policies is food security. The course therefore starts from the evolution of the concept of food security to understand how it is incorporated into food policies. The course then looks at the indicators at the international level that monitor food security in order to be able to outline specific and contextually appropriate policies. The course then proposes examples of methodologies that are used to collect and analyse data at the local level, to form local food policies. Finally, the course offers an analysis of recent urban food policies.
