Learning objectives

The objective of this course is to provide students, through theoretical lectures, exercises in the classroom and work in laboratory, knowledge relating to principles of chemical equilibrium in aqueous solutions, volumetric analysis and main instrumental techniques.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the basic principles of general and organic chemistry.

Course unit content

The course is composed of two sessions: 1th session "Analytical chemistry"; 2nd session "Instrumental analysis".
As for the session "Analytical chemistry", classes are articulated in theoretical lessons and classroom programming exercises. Main topics of the "Analytical chemistry " session are: preparation of standard solutions from pure solutes and by dilution of concentrated solutions; calculation of pH and concentration of the species present in aqueous solutions; principles of volumetric analysis.
As for the "Instrumental analysis" session, classes are focused on main instrumental methods as spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods. Great attention will paid on quality parameters of analytical methods (accuracy, precision, linearity, selectivity)

Teaching methods

Theoretical lectures and exercises will be performed in the classroom

Assessment methods and criteria

- "Analytical chemistry" session: written examination (solution of numerical exercices). Duration: two and half hours. Calculator will be allowed. Examples of exercices are available on the Elly website. Minimum score 18; maximum score 32 (30 cum laude). Exam will be prerformed in the classrom except in the case of sanitary emegency; in this case exam will be performed on line
- "Instrumental analysis" session: 32 multiple-choice questions quiz on the Elly website. Right answer= 1 point; wrong answer = -0.5 points; not given answer = 0 points. Duration 30 min. Calculator not allowed. Topics from "Analytical chemistry" session are also included in the quiz.
Quiz and written exams could be performed in the preferred order.
Final score is the average of both scores (written exercices + quiz)
