Learning objectives
The course is aimed to provide students with the tools to understand the etiology and pathogenesis of the most important infectious diseases common to animals and humans, the essential elements of the related diagnostic methodologies and protocols and acquire the ability to interpret the data obtained from diagnostic tests. These skills must also provide the student with the ability to identify the most suitable methodologies.
D1 - Knowledge and understanding
The student must demonstrate knowledge of the essential elements of the etiology and pathogenesis of the most important infectious diseases common to animals and humans, of the relevant diagnostic methods and acquire the ability to interpret the data obtained from the diagnostic tests of the main infectious diseases.
D2 - Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the training activity the student will have to demonstrate to be able to discuss the essential elements of the etiology and pathogenesis of the most important infectious diseases common to animals and humans, and of the related diagnostic procedure.
D3 - Making judgements
The student should be able to independently identify the etiological and pathogenic aspects of the main infectious diseases common to animals and humans, as well as the most suitable diagnostic procedures and methods to correctly diagnose these diseases.
D4 – Communication
At the end of the training activity, the student must demonstrate that he / she is able to express himself with good lexicon properties regarding the etiology, pathogenesis, as well as the diagnostic procedures and methodologies of the main infectious diseases common to animals and humans.
D5 - Lifelong learning skills
At the end of the training activity, the student must be able to update himself on the etiology, pathogenesis, and on the relevant diagnostic procedures of the main infectious diseases common to animals and humans.

Course unit content
Etiology and pathogenesis of the most important infectious diseases of animals and humans.
Importance and criteria for a correct sampling.
Direct diagnosis of bacterial, viral and fungal diseases: identification, isolation and characterization of the microorganism.
Antibiotic resistance and characterization of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (Multi-drug resistant, Extensively -drug resistant, Pan-drug resistant.)
Indirect diagnosis of bacterial, viral and fungal diseases: detection of antibodies through different methods (ELISA, SN, IFI).
Interpretation and validation (sensitivity, specificity) of serological tests used both to support clinical diagnostics and in population-based screening actions.

Assessment methods and criteria
The assessment of the achievement of the objectives set by the teaching involves an oral and/or written test, aimed at verifying the knowledge, understanding, judgment and communication skills of the candidate.
The student must answer 3 questions, addressing the aspects:
1 question regarding the basic concepts of the study of infectious diseases: infection, transmission, carrier state, reservoir,
1 question regarding a direct or indirect diagnostic methodology
1 question relating to an infectious disease (bacterial, viral or fungal) of a zoonotic nature.
The aim of the exam is to ascertain whether the student has achieved the objective of knowledge, understanding of the contents, the ability to apply the knowledge acquired, to know how to communicate it adequately and to know how to use it extensively independently.
The result of the exam is associated with the global evaluation of the answers given by the student. The final grade, the result of the average of the three assessments, is expressed out of thirty.
Students diagnosed with specific learning disabilities (DSA), certified in accordance with law n° 170/2010 will be granted the concessions provided for by law.
