Course presentation

The History and Criticism of the Arts and Performing Arts second-cycle degree course is based on an established tradition of study and research based on overcoming hierarchies and disciplinary divisions. The disciplinary sectors that constitute the core of the course are in fact the art-historical ones and the articulation of the teachings is defined in such a way as to restore the complexity of the expressive forms from the visual arts, to the performing arts and cinema disciplines, from the Middle Ages to the present day. The course aims to train art historians by providing knowledge at a specialised level in medieval, modern and contemporary art history, in iconography and iconology, in art criticism and museology by stimulating a critical attitude through the acquisition of a sound methodology of historiographical investigation, reserving space for disciplines such as Aesthetics, the History of Architecture and the Science of Information and Documentation.
 
Central moments of the training course are also:

• the internship and the workshop as a fundamental activity for the verification of the knowledge and skills acquired, as a moment of formative confrontation with the problems and practices of historical research, conservation, curatorship and promotion of the cultural heritage;
• the elaboration of the thesis to which a significant number of ECTS credits are reserved and which must correspond to an achieved level of critical maturity.

The course prepares art and entertainment historians and critics who will be able to work in institutions responsible for the protection, conservation and promotion of cultural heritage and in publishing. Graduates will be eligible for postgraduate training to take on coordination and management roles in public and private institutions.
