Integrated course unit module: GENERAL AND HEALTH PHISICS

Learning objectives

The course aims to allow the student to know how to use some dosimetric quantities in relation to the physical laws concerning the interaction radiation interaction with matter. The course also aims to provide the student the knowledge about the italian legislation on ionizing radiations and radiation protection. The course is also devoted to allow the student to know and correctly use the environmental and personal protection equipment. Peculiar applications and examples will be related to the medical field.

Prerequisites

Course unit content

The first lessons concern the definition of physical quantities such as Absorbed Dose, Effective Dose, Equivalent Dose and their application, in relation to the interaction of ionizing radiation with matter. This subject is treated in the Health Physics module. The three principles of radioprotection will then be illustrated, starting from a historical poi of view and then framed in the current legislation. Italian Legislation DLgs 101/20 concerning radiation protection. The second part of the course is focused on the presentation of environmental and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) . The last part will concern how different types of radiation detectors as well as personal and environmental dosimeters work.

Full programme

Ionizing radiation risks: external exposure and internal contamination: Outline of the history of radiation protection. Biological effects of ionizing radiation. Radiation protection assumptions based on the available data. International Commission of Radiation Protection (ICRP) recommendations. Dose limits. Italian legislation: DLgs: 101/20. Radiological Protection Principles: Justification; Optimization; Dose Limitations; Dose Limitations; Fulfillment of the employer and the supervisor; Main Tasks of the Qualified Expert;  obligations with regard to the health and safety of workers. Classification of Radiation Areas : Controlled Radiation Area – Supervised Radiation Area –Categories of exposed radiation workers. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Dosimeters and PPE and specific dispositions. Characteristics and uses of Radiation Detectors; Gas-filled detectors; Photographic emulsions; Thermoluminescence dosimeters; Environmental dosimeters; Personal dosimeters.

Teaching methods

The aims of the course will be mostly achieved with lectures, but also with practical exercises. During class students are engage through the use of spreadsheets and applets.
The lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. Supporting material will be available on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly) and will include slide presentationsof the lectures.

The online learning platforms (Kahoot and Wooclap) will also be used. With Kahoot it is possible to create quizzes ideal for teaching, both remotely and face-to-face, integrating digital in the lessons.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of achievement of the course objectives includes a written examination with one part with open questions and one with 10 multiple-choice questions.
The duration of the written test is 1 hour. The written test is graded on a scale of 0-30.
The final grade, published directly in Esse3, will correspond to the arithmetic mean of the evaluation obtained in the tests of the modules constituting the FISICA GENERALE E SANITARIA exam.
The final mark is reported directly on Esse3

Please note that registration for the exam is mandatory. During lectures, the lecturer administers partial tests, which are useful for monitoring the achievement of learning objectives in progress and providing feedback to students before the official exam.
The dates of the partial tests will be announced by the lecturer during class.

In case of the persistence of the health emergency, the exams will be conducted remotely, as follows:
remote quizzes, through the Elly platform and Teams platform (guide http://selma.unipr.it/).

In this case the test consists of 15 multiple choice /multiple answer questions on the course contents (reference texts + documents uploaded to Elly during the course). There is no penalty for incorrect answers.

Students with SLD / BSE must first contact Le Eli-che: support for students with disabilities, D.S.A., B.E.S. (https://sea.unipr.it/it/servizi/le-eli-che-supporto-studenti-con-disabilita-dsa-bes).

Through questions about the contents of the course will be determined whether the student has achieved the goal of content knowledge and understanding. Through questions regarding healthcare and industrial applications will be determined whether the student has achieved the goal of applying the acquired knowledge.
