Learning objectives

• Provide safe patient care by following best practice and infection control procedures.
• Practice the principles of the dental hygiene process of care while using an evidence-based approach
• Display professional behavior by adhering to the Department's of Medicine and Surgery as well as Centro di Odontoiatria policies
• Demonstrate dental hygiene process of care with different categories of patients.
• Identify risks in practice and apply principles of safety related to the patient and to operators
• Exhibit effective communication and interactive skills with patients, colleagues and other professionals.

Course unit content

This course is intended as an orientation to Clinical Dental Hygiene Practice. The primary focus is the knowledge and application of skills necessary to provide comprehensive patient care utilizing the inherent principles of the dental hygiene process of care.
It will be
• introduced the basic concepts relating to the characteristics of the professional profile
• analyzed and discussed the code of ethics and deontological principles
• presented the main National and International Professional and Scientific Associations for the dental hygienist

The following concepts of clinical evaluation and periodontal instrumentation will be illustrated:
• principles of ergonomics:
• classification of instruments
useful for hygiene treatment
• Patient assessment
o Oral examination:
o Periodontal examination
o Dental examination
o Assessment of needs and Dental Hygiene
o Dental Hygiene treatment planning
• Manual and mechanical instrumentation techniques

The objectives and techniques for removing biofilm at home will be illustrated for different patients and clinical situations
