Integrated course unit module: DYNAMICS AND COMPLIANT DESIGN OF ROAD VEHICLES

Learning objectives

The main goal is fostering a type of engineer which should be able to implement a model (either analytical or numerical) of a vehicle, across different levels of detail.
This will enable a natural cooperation with other disciplines, such as control theory, electric motor desing, and so on; in this way one will reach the capability of simulating an entire vehicle system.

Course unit content

In the first part, the course will deal with the main challenges in the numerical modeling of vehicle dynamics, with special attention to the topics of tire-road interaction, stability, handling, performance optimization.

Full programme

Weel-terrain contact models. Main parameters for 3D tire models (slip, camber, caster and other angles). Deformable tire models. Quarter car model and effect of suspended masses on ride harshness.

Longitudinal dynamics.
Performance limits and goals. Powertrain modeling. Torque and power curves. Gear ratios and their optimization. Traction limits. Aerodynamic loads. Simplified numerical models for longitudinal dynamics and component-based software tools.

Handling: lateral and 3D dynamics.
Main types of suspension. Kinematics of suspensions. Roll center. Steering architectures and their kinematics.
Geometry of masses. Stability, oversteering and understeering, stability plots.
Numerical models with many degrees of freedom and multibody software tools.

Teaching methods

Lessons, plus hands-on sessions and homework with computer software tools.
In case the pandemic emergency has not been resolved, lessons will be given in teleconference via Teams platforms. Lessons on Teams will be also interactive, and presentations will be stored on the Elly platform.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral examination, with questions on the topics discussed during the lessons and a discussion of the results obtained during hands-on sessions and homework.
In case the pandemic emergence has not been resolved, the exam will be given via teleconference via Teams.
