Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the students the knowledge required to understand the operating principles, design skillset, and installation aspects of antennas and RADAR/LIDAR systems for automotive applications such as radiolocation, millimeter-wave, inter- and intra-vehicle communications, and anticollision systems for safety and autonomous driving. The course will also provide knowledge about the operation and relevant parameters of optical elements, LEDs, and lasers used in headlights and rear lights, and the ability to manage issues related to the design and integration constraints of the systems described above in the lighting equipment.
Prerequisites
- The concept of wave: co-propagating, counter-propagating and standing wave; phase velocity; properties of physical media; transmission lines.
- Free-space propagation: Poynting vector in time domain and frequency domain; one-dimensional plane waves; reflection at a discontinuity.
- Antennas: short or hertzian dipole; near-field and far-field of an antenna; characteristic parameters of antennas.
