Learning objectives
The student must know the principal laboratory analyses used in Clinical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry and Medical Genetics, understand their role and importance for correct diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring, evaluate their costs/benefits and apply this knowledge to concrete clinical examples.
Prerequisites
Mandatory propedeutic examinations are defined by the Course Council.
Relevant bases of Biochemistry, Physiology, Immunology, General
Pathology and genetics should be adequately recalled.
Course unit content
The course includes topics that will provide: - knowledge of laboratory techniques, biological materials used for laboratory analyses, and clinical interpretation of the report. - the basis for understanding the main medical cases.
Full programme
The following topics will be covered: - the main laboratory techniques: immuno-enzymatic, molecular biology, and mass spectrometry - the role of the laboratory in the diagnosis and monitoring of specific pathologies - haematological investigation - laboratory evaluation of haemostasis - systemic indicators of inflammation - hints of immunopathology - parameters for the evaluation of the hydro-electrolyte balance and acid-base balance - laboratory tests for diabetes management - dyslipidemias - liver function tests - tests for kidney function - cardiac biomarkers - urine analysis - clinical enzymology - main clinical pictures on a genetic, genomic and chromosomal basis.

Teaching methods
During face-to-face lectures, it will illustrate and discuss the different topics of the program. Students' reception for elucidations only by appointment.
Assessment methods and criteria
The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the course consists of a written examination of the entire program of the course. The student will be evaluated with votes ranging from 0 to 30, with 18 being the lowest vote to positively pass the exam of each module. The final vote will be
decided by mutual agreement among the teachers of the integrated course.
