Learning objectives

At the end of the course, students must have acquired the tools to reflect critically on the topics covered, in particular on the basis of textual analysis and translation practice.
This knowledge and skills can be acquired through regular participation in lessons and other supplementary teaching activities.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of Portuguese language / Level B1

Course unit content

The course will focus on specialized language from a translation perspective (interlingual, intralingual and audiovisual).

Full programme

The mod. A will be dedicated to the study of translation theories and methods, and to the in-depth study of lexical and morphosyntactic differences and analogies between the varieties of the Portuguese language (European, Brazilian and African). Subsequently, starting from the synoptic and contrastive analysis of some translations (parallel and comparable corpora ita-por/por-ita) of diversified textual typologies, semantic, pragmatic, stylistic and discursive aspects will be highlighted and studied.

The mod. B will focus on the concept of collaborative translation, from a theoretical and methodological point of view.
Subsequently, the Italian translation, in a collaborative form, of Almeida Faria's book, O Murmúrio do Mundo (Lisboa, Tinta-da-China, 2010) will be addressed.

The corpus of texts will be uploaded to the Elly platform before the start of the course.

Assessment methods and criteria

Verification of learning takes place through a written test and an oral test. A positive mark in the written test gives access to the oral exam.

Written test (reader) consisting of 4 parts:
Part 1: listening comprehension. Part 2: reading comprehension. Part 3: Vocabulary and grammar. Part 4: a translation* and two written production texts.

*The translation exercise concerns everyone regardless of the year of registration, and is related to Prof. Ragusa's Language and Translation course.

The written test is valid for one year (for the three subsequent sessions).

To pass the test, you must obtain at least a passing grade (i.e. a score of 18/30) in each of the groups. If a student obtains an insufficient score between 15 and 17 out of 30 in just one of the four groups, he or she will be able to repeat that group alone - and not the entire test - on the next available date (the following session). If the failure concerns more than one group or if the score is lower than 15/30, the entire written test will have to be repeated.

Other information

The course (Lingua e traduzione II) will take place in the second semester.
