Learning objectives

The primary aim of the teaching of "Veterinary Medical Therapy (practice)" is to provide students with the adequate knowledge to establish a correct therapeutic approach to the most common pathologies that afflict pets. In particular, the student should be able to:
1) Know the methods of drug administration, understand and develop a targeted therapeutic protocol even in critical situations for the patient. Be able to understand and use the scientific terminology specific to the disciplines (knowledge and understanding).
2) Be able to use the knowledge acquired in situations characterized by the involvement of a single animal or in the context of mass pathologies, with the involvement of multiple organs, of an acute or chronic nature, in subjects of different age groups, and in critical situations also with a view to pharmacological interactions (ability to apply knowledge and understanding).
3) At the end of the lessons the student must demonstrate that he is able to carry out a correct medical-veterinary prescription. Not only that, to have understood the knowledge relating to the various topics covered during the theoretical and theoretical-practical lessons, and to know how to correlate it to the various organizational levels as well as to know how to integrate and manage it in interdisciplinary areas (independence of judgement).
4) The student must demonstrate the ability to clearly communicate the knowledge learned using language that is always appropriate to the interlocutors (communication).
5) In addition to demonstrating the ability to correlate, integrate and manage the knowledge imparted in interdisciplinary fields, the student must demonstrate that he has developed skills that make him largely autonomous in the self-management of knowledge (learning ability).
The student must also be able to implement basic precautions on the current management of oncology chemotherapeutic agents and the use of safety systems for injectable drugs.
and therefore be able to perform a subcutaneous, intramuscular and intravenous injection, verifiable on an animal model.
In particular, the student must be able to prepare an infusion line.

Course unit content

The study program provides knowledge of the concepts of pharmacovigilance and pharmacosurveillance; main antibiotic drugs: mode of action, adverse effects, methods of administration; antibiotic resistance in the One Health approach and prudent drug management; main anti-inflammatory drugs: mode of action, adverse effects, method of administration; main gastroprotective drugs: mode of action, adverse effects, method of administration; fluid therapy (crystalloid and colloid solutions; replacement and maintenance fluid therapy; speed of administration; preparation of an infusion line); main oncological chemotherapy drugs: use and precautions for use; execution of drug administration on models (e.g. in the Clinical skill lab); “Clinical reasoning”: the choice of therapy based on the clinical case; notions of management and communication with the owner of the animal. Furthermore, the methods for consulting the list of authorized veterinary drugs and finding the guidelines and relevant legislation are illustrated.

Teaching methods

Frontal/practical lessons on animal models and discussion of documented clinical cases.

Assessment methods and criteria

The verification of the achievement of the objectives set by the teaching includes a written test using the example of clinical cases that require medical treatment. The purpose of the exam is to ascertain whether the student has achieved the objective of knowledge, understanding of the contents, the ability to apply the knowledge acquired, knowing how to communicate it adequately and knowing how to use it extensively independently.
The result of the exam is associated with the global evaluation of the answers provided by the student to the proposed topics; a single seriously insufficient answer voids the exam. The final grade, the result of the average of the evaluations, is expressed in thirtieths.
Students diagnosed with specific learning disabilities (DSA), certified pursuant to law no. 170/2010, will be granted the benefits provided by law.
