Learning objectives

The teaching aims to enable the student to independently draw conclusions regarding technologies in agriculture and the production of raw materials as defined in the specific objectives of the Degree Course in Food Science and Technology.
In particular, the student must be able to understand the meaning of sustainability, sustainable production and technologies applied to plant production and express opinions in the correct way and with a scientific approach. The expected learning outcomes are: 1) Knowledge of innovations and technologies in agriculture and their applications with a view to sustainability. 2) Application skills: to apply methodologies and techniques for the production of plant foods. 3) Autonomy of judgement: assessing the applicability of technologies and predicting results. 4) Communication skills: Communication of technology applications and innovations. 5) Learning ability: Ability to critically consult databases and websites relating to sustainable agricultural production methods.

Knowledge of plant production is required

Course unit content

The teaching complements the content of Plant Production and covers the analysis of technologies and innovations in agriculture with a view to sustainability. The first part of the course includes the analysis of the evolution of the agricultural sector up to today's 'digital' agriculture.
The second part will cover the analysis of data flow. The third part will cover the application of technologies on case studies. The last part will cover the application of digital technologies on organic farming, the agri-food sector and the traceability of agricultural production.

Teaching methods

The teaching includes classroom lectures. Lectures will be conducted with the aid of slides, which will be a supplement to the recommended texts. The slides will be available online on the Elly SAF website in pdf format for students. During the lectures, the appropriate use of technical language will be emphasised, and links between the various parts of the course will be stressed.

Assessment methods and criteria

The verification of learning will be carried out by means of an oral examination through the discussion of a case study chosen by the learner and discussed by means of a power point presentation.
