Integrated course unit module: HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY AND CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

Learning objectives

The course aims to provide the information and the scientific supports for a correct methodological approach that develops the knowledge and the
necessary understanding of the topics of Clinical Biochemistry to allow a correct approach to the application aspects, specific to the student of the
Bachelor Degree in Techniques Of biomedical laboratory. The acquired skills will allow to understand the complexity of biological samples, their
variability, and the critical steps associated with their treatment and conservation. This will allow you to recognize the possible sources of error and apply the appropriate remedies.

Prerequisites

There is no mandatory propedeuticity, but considering that Clinical Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary subject, the student should have the
basic concepts of Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Course unit content

The course includes integration between the disciplines of Biochemistry, Instrumental Biochemistry and General Clinical Biochemistry.

Full programme

The use of laboratory data in clinical practice. The interpretation of biochemical data. Reference and variability of laboratory data. Disorders of the hydrosiline equilibrium and of the acid-base balance. Isoenzymes. Determination of enzymatic activity. Analysis of blood and urine. Evaluation of hepatic function and diagnosis of idle. Diabetes mellitus. Glycemic homeostasis. Nucleotide metabolism and hyperuricemia. Metabolism of amino acids in clinical biochemistry. Tumor markers.

Bibliography

1. Biochimica clinica essenziale- dal laboratorio ai quadri di patologia clinica. Elisabetta Albi, Zanichelli editore
2. Biochimica clinica e medicina di laboratorio. Marcello Ciaccio e Giuseppe Lippi, Edises
3. Principi di biochimica Lehninger - Zanichelli Editore

Teaching methods

Lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. Supporting material will be available on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly) and will include slide presentations, audio-video aids.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the module includes a oral exam. The knowledge and understanding of the contents
by the students will be assessed through questions on the topics of the whole module.
