Learning objectives

Give the knowledge to understand when therapeutic monitoring of certain classes of drugs is useful and necessary. The course also aims to inform students about radiopharmaceuticals used in diagnosis and therapy, an innovative and promising frontier of precision medicine, which makes use of multidisciplinary teams in which the radiopharmacist is a key and transversal figure. At the end of the course students will be able to answer to specialist and non-specialist persons on therapeutic drugs monitoring and on radiopharmaceuticals used in diagnosis and therapy

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of chemistry and pharmacology

Course unit content

In the first lessons, some concepts of general pharmacology are going to be reviewed in order to understand when therapeutic drug monitoring is useful. The following lessons are going to describe some of the drug classes that may be subject to therapeutic monitoring or emergency dosing. Finally, the last lessons are going to be focused on the description of radiopharmaceuticals, their diagnostic and therapeutic use, and their possible toxic effects.

Full programme

General pharmacology: plasmatic curves of drugs, sources of variability of the individual response to drugs, adverse reactions, drug handling, drug interactions.

Classes of drugs subject to therapeutic monitoring: antibiotics, anticoagulants, antidepressants, antiepileptics, anticancer drugs, bronchodilators, drugs of abuse, cardioactive drugs, immunosuppressants.

Emergency drug dosing.

Radiopharmaceuticals: overview and diagnostic and therapeutic use

Teaching methods

Teaching is going to carried out through lectures with the aid of slides. During the lessons the topics indicated in the program will be presented and discussed, trying to involve the students as active part of the lesson (Eurostic-Socratic lessons). Furthermore, thanks to the kind availability of the staff of the Nuclear Medicine Department of the Parma University Hospital, the final lesson on radiopharmaceuticals will benefit from the presence of professionals that will offer students the opportunity to get to know more closely the increasingly expanding reality of radiopharmacy. The teaching material used will be uploaded to the Elly platform. The teacher is available by appointment for clarifications on the lessons

Assessment methods and criteria

The achievement of the course aims is going to be evaluated through a power-point presentation concerning a specific drug subject to therapeutic monitoring or a radiopharmaceutical. The presentation will offer discussion points to ensure the student's acquisition and understanding of the notions of the course
