Integrated course unit module: PHYSICS LABORATORY 2

Learning objectives

At the end of this course the students should be able to:
- set up simple DC and AC circuits;
- carry out measurements of magnetic fields;
- use basic instrumentation for electtrical measurements (multimeters and oscilloscopes);
- discuss and analyze critically experimental results;
- write clear experimental reports.

Prerequisites

Laboratory of Physics 1.

Course unit content

Theoretical lectures and practicals about basic electrical circuits and electromagnetism.

Full programme

DC circuits: ideal and real generators, resistors. Instrumentation: oscilloscopes, digital and analog multimeters. Measurements of current, voltage, resistance and electromotive forces.
Time varying signals: periodic and non periodic. Inductance and Capacitance. Impedence. Fasors. RC and RL circuits. High-pass and low-pass filters. LCR series circuit: free and forced oscillations. LCR parallel circuit. Notch and Band pass filters. Transformers. Measurements of self-inductance and mutual inductance. Transmission lines.

Lectrues will be made available before the lectures via the software Elly.

Teaching methods

Lectures will include a brief introduction on the relevant theory followed by experimental work. Students will be divided in groups of 2 to carry out the experiments and write the experimental reports. Instructions for the experiment will be given in the lecture notes, together with the relevant theory. The lecture notes will be uploaded in Elly at the beginning of the course and will cover every aspect of the course. The lecturer will provide support and supervision at all times during laboratory sessions.Lecture notes will be discussed and made available to the students before the lectures, using the Elly software.

Assessment methods and criteria

The progress of the students along the guidelines will be evaluated through:
- close supervision of the students activity during the laboratory lessons;
- a final oral exam.
The final marks will determined by attendance and attitude during lectures and practicals (25%) and by the final exam (75%).
