Learning objectives


The course aims to provide the student with the basis for understanding the concepts of risk and risk factors for human health considering the legislation on safety and risk prevention for workers, providing the essential elements for the preventive measures to be adopt in relation to the specific risks treated. It also aims to provide knowledge relating to the general principles of hygiene and prevention to be applied in the specific sector of study and activity, as well as knowledge relating to the functioning of a company organization in all its aspects, including the problems with legal implications of a biomedical laboratory. The objective of the integrated course is both to promote the ability to apply the knowledge acquired in identifying the risk conditions deriving from the future profession and to know how to apply the ethical principles relating to the profession of biomedical laboratory technician inserted in the context of a corporate healthcare organization.

Course unit content


The course aims to address the issues necessary to understand the causal links between exposure to risk agents and the appearance of occupational diseases. The main health prevention and protection tools will be taken into consideration with regard to specific occupational risks, with particular reference to the health sector by providing fundamental knowledge relating to current legislation on safety, health and protection in the workplace. The course also provides fundamental knowledge relating to business organization in its specificities, the legal implications of the organization of a biomedical laboratory and the legal responsibility of the biomedical laboratory technician.

GENERAL AND APPLIED HYGIENE:
Definition of health
History and applications of epidemiology
The sources of epidemiological data
Epidemiological measures
Ecological, cross-sectional, case-control, cohort studies and experimental studies
Epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases
Host-parassite relationships, sources and reservoirs of infection, chain of infection.
Notification, isolation,diagnostic investigation of infectious dieseases. Cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, disinfestation
Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention
Vaccine prophylaxis, immunoprophylaxis and chemioprophylaxis. Epidemiology and prevention of health care-associated infections.
Epidemiology and prevention of npn-ifectious diseases
Elements of water hygiene and food hygiene
Health education and promotion

OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE:
Introduction to Occupational Medicine and general concepts. Historical notes on the birth and evolution of Occupational Medicine. Current legislation on the protection of safety and health at work. Occupational accidents and diseases. Biological risk: definition of biological agent, characteristics and classification of biological agents according to Legislative Decree 81/2008. Main biological agents present in the health sector. Biological accident and immunoprophylaxis. Standard precautions. Organisational/transversal risk: shift work. Related stress-work. Burnout. Physical risk: ionizing radiation. Radiation protection. Professional tumors: classification. Mesothelioma. Hepatic angiosarcoma. Cancer of the nasal and paranasal sinuses. Occupational diseases: hypersensitivity pneumonia, asthma, professional neuropathies, professional dermatopathies.Current legislation on the protection of pregnancy at work.

Teaching methods


During the lectures will be presented and discussed the topics, indicated in the program trying to involve the student so that he can be an active part of the lesson. The lessons will take place in presence. The teaching material, on a weekly basis, will be deposited on the specific platform reserved for students (Teams or Elly). The teacher is available for clarification on the lessons by appointment (agreed by e-mail) in the office or at a distance via Teams.

Assessment methods and criteria


The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the course includes an oral examination. Through questions regarding the course contents it will be ascertained whether the student has achieved the objective of knowledge and understanding of the contents and whether he has achieved the objective of applying the acquired knowledge.
