Learning objectives

This course aims to equip students with the foundational skills needed to create technical drawings in digital format and develop 3D virtual models using CAD tools. Upon completion, students will be able to:

(i) Understand and apply the principles of parametric and 3D solid modeling.

(ii) Create 3D CAD models of individual mechanical components and complex assemblies.

(iii) Utilize advanced CAD software functions for parameterization, configuration, and project modification management.

(iv) Interpret and produce technical drawings from 3D models, following technical drawing standards.

(v) Manage project revisions, store, and share technical documentation.

(vi) Collaborate on an engineering project, document their work, and present results effectively.

Prerequisites

None.

Note: “Machine Design AB” exam (I module) is strongly recommended.

Course unit content

The course will cover the following topics:

1) Fundamentals of 3D solid and parametric modeling. This introductory module will cover: (i) a review of technical drawing principles and CAD 2D modeling basics, (ii) an introduction to parametric solid modeling principles, and (iii) an overview of parametric CAD software, including essential tools and interface navigation.

2) Modeling of basic mechanical components. This module will include: (i) creating two-dimensional sketches as the foundation for 3D modeling, (ii) key modeling functions: extrusion, revolution, sweep, and loft, (iii) parameterization and dimensional constraints to ensure model flexibility, and (iv) practical exercises focused on creating basic components, such as flanges, supports, shafts, and pins.

3) Assemblies and management of parametric assemblies. This module will cover: (i) creating assemblies, including constraints and mobility management, (ii) assembly techniques for parts and sub-assemblies, and (iii) practical exercises in building and verifying complex assemblies.

4) Technical documentation and 2D drawing generation from 3D models. This module will focus on: (i) generating orthographic, isometric, and sectional views from 3D models, (ii) technical drawing standards (ISO) and accurate dimensioning practices, (iii) detailed exploded views and sectional diagrams for complex assemblies, (iv) dimensioning and annotating components, with specifications on geometric and dimensional tolerances, and (v) exercises for producing comprehensive technical drawings of components and assemblies with complete annotations.

5) Revision and project documentation management. This module will cover: (i) project revision procedures, including model updates and documentation, (ii) storage and version control of technical drawings, (iii) sharing and exchange of CAD documentation through collaborative platforms, and (iv) exercises in project revision management and preparing final documentation.

Additionally, students will have access to lecture slides and exercise materials (workbook) after each class. This material will be available for download via the Elly platform or by emailing the teacher.

Teaching methods

The course includes 48 hours of classroom lectures (6 ECTS - 8 hours of classroom lectures per ECTS).

Classes will consist of 50% lectures and 50% practical exercises (technical drawings using SolidWorks software). Students are required to bring a personal laptop. If classroom time is not enough to complete the exercise, students are expected to finish it at home. Completing all exercises is crucial for the final exam, and they must be submitted on the day of the oral exam.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam consists of a 1-hour oral exam, structured as a group project (maximum 3 students per group), concerning the development of a mechanical/mechatronic project agreed upon with the instructor.

Assessment includes:

- CAD Project (mandatory submission via UNIPR SharePoint workspace): required materials include (i) complete 3D CAD models of parts and assemblies, (ii) 2D technical drawings, and (iii) a technical report on the completed project. All materials must be submitted one week before the oral exam.

- Oral Exam: This consists of two parts:
Part 1 – PowerPoint Presentation (approximately 30 minutes) – each group presents their project, covering the modeling process, design choices, technical details, and documentation.
Part 2 – Open-ended questions (approximately 30 minutes) focused on modeling strategies and the functionality of SolidWorks software.

Students must register for the written exam via the ESSE3 portal (open up to 3 days before the scheduled date).
Exam results are published on the Esse3 portal within one week of the exam date.
