Learning objectives
Know the principles of patient’s evaluation and perform correct procedures in relation to the clinical and behavioral status of the patient
Formulate the oral hygiene treatment plan based on the patient's general and oral health status;
Apply the clinical diagnostic-therapeutic protocols of primary and secondary prevention of diseases in the oral cavity
Be familiar with and correctly apply the principles of ergonomics in clinical practice
Know and carry out primary and secondary prevention procedures relevant to the dental hygiene profession based on the specific needs of each patient
Know the principles of basic and advanced periodontal instrumentation
Implement dietary assessments aimed at preventing oro-dental diseases;
Know the main oral health preventive interventions in the community and apply them;
Plan community-based preventive programmes
Be familiar with interventions in emergency situations
Demonstrate ethical behavior;
Show communication skills, helping relationship;
Demonstrate collaboration skills in team work;
Prerequisites
Successfully passed the 1st year internship exam
Suitability certified by Occupational Medicine
Certification of FAD course on safety at work Legislative Decree 81/08
Course unit content
Observation of the activity in the clinics as a whole;
Disinfection of the operating unit and sterilization of the instruments;
Reception, preparation and discharge of the patient;
Supply of consumable items at the operatory
Patient appointment management;
Formulation of treatment plan in relation to the patient’s risk level
Professional oral hygiene treatment in different life stages and adults with PSR 0-1-2-3 and /or risk of caries.
Professional oral hygiene therapy in patients with special needs.
Supportive periodontal treatment planning
Dietary evaluation related to oral health
Critical interpretation of scientific articles useful for choosing and applying appropriate oral hygiene therapies

Assessment methods and criteria
The internship exam at the end of the year will be accessible only to students who have reached the number of compulsory attendance hours for the current year. The assessment of learning will be composed of three parameters:
1) attendance 2) clinical skills 3) Knowledge of theories applied to practice
