Learning objectives


Learning about kidney diseases by acquiring in particular applied skills concerning renal replacement treatments, including transplantation, and intepreting clinical-laboratory manifestations of kidney failure.

Course unit content


The kidneys: outline of Anatomy and physiology, kidney failure, prevention, treatment of kidney disease, dialysis, transplantation.
Extracorporeal dialysis: dialysis membranes, solute transport, standard dialysis, hemodialysis techniques, dialysis fluid, water treatment, dialysis prescription
Vascular accesses for hemodialysis, venous catheters and A-V Fistula. From preparation to management, prevention of complications
Peritoneal Dialysis: generalities, catheter types and mode of insertion, peritoneal membrane, technical aspects of exchanges, types of DP CAPD and APD, infectious and non-infectious complications. Role of the structured pre-Dialysis outpatient clinic.
Clinical aspects of patients with terminal kidney failure: anemia, bone mineral disease, dyslipidemia, hypertension. Treatment of kidney failure: Transplantation
