Learning objectives

To educate the student on the pathophysiology and clinical course of the main diseases affecting the cervico-facial segment. The Course will encompass (a) lectures, (b) tutorials and (c) seminars. Students will, by default, attend all lectures and tutorials, but are free to choose the seminar(s), they are most interested in. Upon completion of the Course, each student will be able to discuss basic clinical cases, involving the cervico-facial segment, by creating individual flow charts on diagnostics and therapeutics.

Prerequisites

Having successfully completed the pre-clinical Courses

Course unit content

Otolaryngological Diseases (SSD MED/31, CFU 3) and Audiology (SSD MED/32, CFU 1)
The Course aims to address the most important topics in the field of Otolaryngology. The three fundamental chapters of the Course, "the ear, the nose, the larynx", are proposed sequentially. Clinical and instrumental semeiotics is the introduction to each of the three chapters.
DISEASES OF THE VISUAL APPARATUS (SSD MED/30, CFU 3)
1. Refractive defects of the eye and principles for their correction. 2. Instrumental investigation methods used in ophthalmology (visual field, ERG, VEP, fluorangiography, ultrasonography, optical coherence tomography OCT, corneal topography): modalities of use and appropriateness in the indication. Diseases of the orbit, eyelids and tear ducts, with particular reference to oncological pathology. Orbital cellulitis. Exophthalmos and thyroid ophthalmopathy. 4. Inflammatory diseases of the anterior segment of the eye (conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratitis, iritis). General concepts on the diagnostic and therapeutic approach, and differential diagnosis with neoplastic diseases of the ocular surface and anterior segment. 5. Glaucoma: main types (angle closure, chronic open angle, congenital). Main clinical features, general criteria for diagnosis and therapy. 6. Cataracts (in adults and children). Notions of prevalence and the main pathogenetic theories. Basic features of surgical therapy. 7. Retinal vascular diseases . Relationship with systemic pathology. General assessment criteria, main clinical forms, therapeutic approach. 8. Vitreo-retinal diseases: retinal detachment (rhegmatogenous and tractional), vitreo-retinal proliferation (primary and secondary), retinopathy of the premature. Age-related macular degeneration: differential diagnosis with other forms of macular exudative diseases, and principles of therapy. perimetric. General criteria of diagnosis and therapeutic approach.
ODONTOSTOMATOLOGICAL DISEASES (SSD MED/28, CFU 1)Knowledge of the pathophysiology of the stomatognathic apparatus. Provide the diagnostic basis of the main odontostomatological pathologies.
MAXILLO FACIAL SURGERY (SSD MED/29, CFU 1) The content of the course will focus on labio-maxillofacial clefts: embryology, clinic, therapeutic aspects
- Clinic of major craniofacial malformations
- Maxillofacial dysmorphies: clinic, therapeutic aspects
- Surgical pathology of the salivary glands (with particular interest in parotid tumours)
- Cancer of the oral cavity: aetiopathogenesis, clinic, therapeutic aspects
- Malignant tumours of the paranasal sinuses: diagnosis, clinic, therapeutic aspects
- Reconstructive surgery of the head and neck: general concepts and outlines of the main flaps used Traumatology of the maxillofacial sphincter: clinic, therapeutic aspects.

Teaching methods

Oral and practical lesson. the course will start covering the recall of the anatomy of the area. Then, the program will be covered in order to discuss similar topics (e.g. basics in diagnostics, trauma, neoplasms, pediatric diseases etc.) at teh same time within the frame of the individual disciplines (e.g. ophthalmology, ORL, dental and maxillary sciences).
Lectures will be supported by slide presentations, which will be available to students on the Elly platform (https://elly2023.medicina.unipr.it ).

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam. Students with SLD / BSE must first contact C.A.I.: support for students with disabilities, D.S.A., B.E.S. (https://cai.unipr.it). The student will be tested on each of the main topics of the Course (i.e. Ophthaomology, ORL, dental and maxillary sciences). An inadequate level of knowledge, in any of those topics, will lead to failure.
