Integrated course unit module: OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE

Learning objectives

The course is aimed to know and understand the fundamental principles of toxicity from drugs and xenobiotics. The student will have to learn the basics of toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics, and the cellular targets of the toxic action of drugs. The course will illustrate the main types of toxicity in relation to the temporal development of the effects and the main toxic actions of drugs. The contents will be chosen to better understand the concept of the therapeutic index of the active ingredients used in therapy, as well as preventive measures to limit adverse drug reactions.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic disciplines (Anatomy, Physiology, Istology, Bichemistry, General Pathology).

Course unit content

General toxicology

Full programme

General concepts of toxicology.
Type of toxic actions and factors influencing drug toxicity.
Toxicokinetics, toxicodynamics and toxicogenetics; importance of toxicology in the development of new drugs and therapy. Concept of Therapeutic index.
Molecular mechanisms of toxicity
Notes on organ toxicity from drugs, adverse drug reactions.
Main molecules commonly responsible for adverse reactions.
Therapeutic drug monitoring.
Toxicity from pesticides, phytotherapeutics and main xenobiotics (metals, hydrocarbons, biphenyls, etc.).
Other toxicology topics will be acquired by the student in the Occupational Medicine Course, where topics more specifically related to xenobiotic toxicology will be covered.
