Learning objectives

To have a general overview of the wireless technologies for vehicle-to-everything communications as an essential component of connected and automated mobility.

Prerequisites

Basics of networking and wireless communications.

Course unit content

The course provides an overview of the main wireless technologies for vehicle-to-everything communications, including aspects of the various layers of the protocol stack and the main communication standards.

Full programme

- Introduction to vehicle-to-everything (V2X)
- Protocol stack model of the ETSI Cooperative Intelligent Transport System (C-ITS)
- Applications and facilities layer, with particular reference to C-ITS services
- Networking and transport layer, with particular reference to GeoNetworking
- Vehicular Wi-Fi: IEEE 802.11p and related standards
- Cellular communications applied to V2X, with particular attention to short-range C-V2X (sidelink)
- Brief overview of other wireless technologies that are relevant for connected vehicles (Bluetooth, LoRa, ZigBee)

Teaching methods

Classroom lectures with examples and results from on-field experiments.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam will include two parts.
For the first part, the student selects a V2X use case and provides a 5 minute pitch about its requirements, possible implementation, potential issues. Details will be provided during the course.
The second part aims at checking the acquisition of the main concepts discussed during the lectures and consists of an oral exam.
The two parts will be one just after the other in the same day.
