Learning objectives
The course aims to introduce students to the methods and guidelines of speech therapy intervention in the rehabilitation of serious brain injuries in the different recovery phases (acute, post-acute and outcomes) with particular regard to the problems related to the evolution of the state of consciousness and the evaluation and rehabilitation of neurogenic dysphagia

Course unit content
Definition of "severe acquired brain injury", classification of states of consciousness and their evaluation;
characteristics of the patient with GCA.
Introduction to teamwork. Physiology of swallowing. Management of the tracheostomy tube. Artificial feeding.
Clinical and instrumental evaluation of swallowing. Signs and symptoms of dysphagia, rehabilitative techniques, adaptive measures, maneuvers and facilitating postures.
Cognitive stimulation and reorientation
Language deficit due to GCA and alternative methods of communication

Teaching methods
Class lessons: the program themes will be discussed with the aid of slides. The proposed topics will be the subject of collective discussion and study on the basis of ideas and any questions raised during the lessons themselves.
Assessment methods and criteria
The achievement of the goals of the course is verified by an oral exam.
Answering questions about the contents of the course, the student will demonstrate whether he/she has achieved the goals of knowledge and understanding of the contents and the ability to apply the acquired knowledge.
