Learning objectives
The primary objective of the course is to train speech therapists who have the technical-practical and behavioural knowledge and skills to carry out the best professional practice.
The training will enable students to acquire knowledge (knowing), skills (knowing how to do) and interpersonal skills (knowing how to be).
Relational skills are crucial since therapy is primarily a communicative act involving not only the patient and the therapist but also the caregivers and all the people who make up the social system that revolves around the patient.
During the course, the speech therapy graduate will acquire:
- good knowledge of the fundamentals of the propaedeutic disciplines (physics, statistics, computer science, sociology and general pedagogy), bio-molecular sciences and the integrated biological functions of human organs and apparatuses (biochemistry, biology, general and specific anatomy and physiology);
- in-depth knowledge of the disciplines that characterise the profession of Speech Therapist (medical and applied technical sciences, child neuropsychiatry, linguistics and glottology, theories and philosophy of language and communication, general and clinical psychology, otorhinolaryngology, audiology and phoniatrics, neurology);
- in-depth knowledge of disciplines in the field of the physiology and pathology of language, communication and swallowing in children, adults and elderly adults, neurological and degenerative pathologies, cognitive and language functions, linguistics, theories of language development and methodologies applied to speech evaluation and rehabilitation;
- the ability to autonomously practice prevention, evaluation and functional rehabilitation of communicative, linguistic and cognitive disabilities by applying different evaluation and intervention methodologies, planning time and verifying outcomes;
- the ability to assess and prepare the appropriate rehabilitation setting for the therapy or therapeutic exercise to ensure the best possible conditions for both patient and therapist;
- the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, to interact with colleagues and other health professionals, to operate with defined degrees of autonomy and to fit readily into the work environment.
