Advising and guidance | physics | University of Parma

Advising and guidance refer to all activities aimed at enabling the future student to plan and manage their learning in a way that is consistent with their personal life goals and makes full use of their individual skills and interests to achieve personal fulfilment.

Depending on the stage of the university process at which these activities are carried out, a distinction is made between:

Advising: carried out before the choice of course of study, it is aimed at future students and offers support in identifying the course to be undertaken on the basis of individual interests, expectations and aptitudes. In this phase, the various possible scenarios are presented to the future student and the alternatives of the university path are illustrated;
Guidance: carried out during the university career, it is aimed at enrolled students and is designed to guide them through the courses of study already undertaken, allowing them to establish a better interaction with the structures and the university context;
Career guidance: carried out close to or after graduation, is aimed at graduates or graduating students and is designed to facilitate their introduction into the working environment.

Advising

The Second-cycle degrees in Parma have a dedicated Open Day, where students can attend a presentation of the course, which can also be viewed on the internet via live streaming. During the Open-Day, interested parties can then ask the attending Professors and students about the courses on offer.

In order to get a closer look at the places that will host the years of university studies, either on dedicated days during the Open Days, or by individual request, Professors, students and department staff will accompany visitors to the facilities and illustrate everything the department has to offer.

At the end of the second semester, there is usually an advising activity specifically aimed at third-year First-cycle degree students, the Info Week Research. For one week, the atrium of the Physics Department will host posters prepared by the Physics Unit's research groups describing the activities and prospects in the areas of the three Second-cycle degree courses, together with posters illustrating the possibilities and modalities of external internships and the internationalisation activities of the degree course.

In the same period, a presentation of the Second-cycle Degree Course is also organised by the RAQ, which illustrates the general structure of the Second-cycle Degree Course, followed by a detailed presentation of the study paths in the areas of Theoretical Physics, Physics of Matter and Functional Materials, and Biophysics and Physics of Soft Matter, in the presence of a representative group of Professors who teach courses in the Second-cycle Degree Course.

Guidance and tutoring

The guidance delegate and the tutor Professors provide advice on drawing up programmes of study and on issues concerning propaedeuticity, how to attend courses, tutorials and laboratory activities, the cultural and professional orientation of students, the promotion of their participation in national and international exchange or mobility programmes, as well as the referral to appropriate support structures in the event of any difficulties or situations of psychological distress.

In the context of the activities organised by the degree course, a useful tool for ongoing orientation are the DEPARTMENTAL COLLOQUIA (http://smfi.unipr.it/it/ricerca/colloquium), in which Italian and foreign researchers illustrate recent relevant results on a broad spectrum of topics represented within the degree course, and which could therefore constitute an area of specialisation for the student in the choice of optional courses or in the topic of the research thesis. Seminar speakers are expressly invited to give a non-specialist presentation at a level accessible to students from the Second-cycle degree upwards. The Second-cycle Degree seminar series is organised on a monthly basis.

Students are given the opportunity to cumulate seminar hours with the other activities recognised within the 3 ECTS credits of 'Other Educational Activities'.
