Course presentation
The Master’s Degree Course in 'Medical, Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology' aims to train a graduate who can enter the labour market with an original curriculum and already oriented in terms of professional skills. In fact, the course offers students several curricula, identified on the basis of the area's peculiarities and employment needs. The course is organized as follows: 1) In the first semester of the first year, the course of study is common (30 ECTS credits) with integrated courses that provide all students with knowledge and skills both to complete the basic preparation and for optimal learning of the contents of the courses in the following semesters. In this period, students acquire a sound and in-depth knowledge and competence on: - structure and function of biomolecules, cells and organs; - molecular bases of diseases and defensive responses in complex animals; - molecular bases of drug action; 2) In the second semester of the first year (28 ECTS credits), students can choose between three different curricula. Depending on the chosen orientation, graduates will acquire sound knowledge and understanding as well as the ability to apply it in different contexts: Curriculum 'Biotechnologies for prevention and therapy' - in the prevention of the main diseases; - in the design of biotechnological drugs and devices - in molecular and cellular therapies in haematology; - in diagnostic methodologies of genetic, metabolic, tumour and infection diseases Curriculum 'Biotechnologies applied to animal production and food safety' - in biotechnologies applied to animal reproduction and genetic improvement - in biotechnologies applied to food quality and safety - in the design and use of biotechnological vaccines - in the biotechnologies involved in the use and preparation of pre and probiotics Curriculum 'Biotechnologies applied to regenerative and reparative medicine' - in the biological bases of repair and regeneration - in the principles and techniques of regeneration and repair of differentiated tissues - in the biology and biotechnological bases of cell therapy - in biomaterials and biocompatible synthetic materials used in tissue engineering 3) In the first semester of the second year, there is again a common training pathway (30 ECTS credits) with characterising integrated courses (in which students acquire competence and the ability to apply knowledge in drug formulation, learn adequate knowledge of biotechnological patent legislation and bioethics, and competence in choosing, preparing and experimentally using cellular and animal models) and part of the internship; 4) In the second semester of the second year, students attend the optional activity (8 ECTS credits), the English B2 course and the internship (18 ECTS credits) aimed at preparing the experimental thesis (12 ECTS credits) . In relation to the optional training activity (8 ECTS credits), the student may choose an integrated course also belonging to a different subject area from the one attended, thus having the opportunity to acquire knowledge also in other specific subjects. The CoS offers its own student-choice courses on topics that complement and/or supplement the knowledge and skills acquired in the various curricula. The student may also decide to attend elective training offered by other degree courses at the university relevant to the course of study undertaken. |
