Advising and guidance

Guidance refers to all activities aimed at enabling the future students or current students to plan and manage their learning in a manner consistent with personal life goals and making full use of individual skills and interests in order to achieve personal fulfilment.
Depending on the moment in the university course when these activities are implemented, a distinction is made between

  • advising: out before choosing a degree course, which is aimed at future students and offers support in identifying the course to be undertaken on the basis of individual interests, expectations and aptitudes. In this phase, the various possible scenarios are presented to the future student and the alternatives of the university pathway are illustrated;
  • guidance: carried out during the university career, this is aimed at enrolled students and is designed to guide them within the courses of study already undertaken, enabling them to establish a better interaction with the structures and the university context;
  • career guidance: carried out close to or after graduation, it is aimed at graduates or graduating students and aims to facilitate their introduction into the working environment.

Advising

The degree course in Social Work organises specific advising/guidance activities as part of OPEN DAY, within the facilities where future students will spend their university life. The Open Days also represent an advising/guidance and information opportunity aimed primarily at enrolled fourth- and fifth-year students, but also at first-cycle graduates intending to continue their studies by enrolling in second-cycle degree courses.
At each OPEN DAY, the teaching facility therefore sets up a reception point where interested parties can ask professors/instructors, tutors and students directly for information and take part in presentations of the degree course as well as visit the facilities (classrooms, laboratories, libraries). The activities include dedicated advising/guidance initiatives, with 'simulated' classes and illustrative video screenings. Reference professors/istructors and tutors are present throughout the events, making themselves available for presentations and interviews.
In addition to the activities conducted during the OPEN DAY, the Degree Course in Social Work organises, under the coordination of the Welcome and advising/guidance unit, a series of additional initiatives, including:

  •  the organisation of advising/guidance meetings for students of the last classes of upper secondary schools, with the participation of professors/instructors of the Degree Course and tutors;
  • the publication of the Student's Guide, available on-line on the website of the Degree Course in Social Work, containing educational information;
  • the publication of information brochures on the Degree Course;
  • the appointment of Degree Course professors/instructors, from whom students may request specific information on the training course and on the recognition of previous careers;
  • the organisation of seminar initiatives, dealing with "social work" issues, also with interdisciplinary profiles, aimed at High School students.

Guidance

The service is intended to support the proper integration of students into the degree course through, in particular, specific tutoring activities aimed, above all, at students enrolled in the first year of the course, as well as to encourage effective career progression by students through, in particular, assistance in the compilation of individual programmes of study, ongoing advising/guidance activities aimed at encouraging students to choose the degree course most suited to their characteristics, as well as remedial activities for students experiencing difficulties.
In addition to the so-called general tutoring, i.e. support in organising study methods, tutoring for didactic-integrative, preparatory and remedial activities has been offered in the degree course of Social Work for a number of years.
