Integrated course unit module: VETERINARY CLINICAL OBSTETRICS

Learning objectives

Provide the knowledge and manual skills needed for clinical examination of the genital tract, to diagnose gynecological problems and Andrology (ultrasound examination) in small and large animals.

Course unit content

The practical exercises will be held in the first instance on anatomical findings of devices geniotali of horse and cattle, on which students will visit and perform simulations of FA, and cesarean surgery Caslick for the mare, ultrasound of the genital structures and possible pregnancies. Then the students will perform clinical and gynecological visits animals hosted by the Department for the practical work.

Teaching methods

Practice in the dissecting room with genitalia cows and mares. During which the student must be able to recognize the different portions genitals, ovarian structures as a function of estrous stage, simulate artificial insemination, ultrasonography of the reproductive tract and pregnancy, vulvar plastic surgery (Caslick) for the mare. In a second step tutorials will take place using the animals housed at the departmental structures (mares, stallions, cattle) and small animal hospital in the activities at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation involves a written test of three open questions about the program being carried out. The student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the essential elements of reproduction management and gynecological and ultrasound examination techniques, artificial fertilization in domestic animals (small and large animals) and finally the management of semen material. In addition, it will be required to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding acquired in identifying the problems of managing livestock breeding and knowing how to prepare an appropriate sickness plan and appropriate disease prevention synergy with the veterinarian. The written test will be evaluated with a 0-30 vote scale. Praise is given in the case of achieving the highest score on each item to which the disciplinary vocabulary is added. An examination with an overall score of 18/30 is sufficient. The duration of the written test is two hours.
