Integrated course unit module: SPORTS MEDICINE, SPORT-THERAPY AND DOPING

Learning objectives

During the course the student will acquire specific knowledge for understanding the mechanisms through which physical exercise plays a fundamental role in health promotion and how it represents a highly effective tool in the prevention (primary and secondary) and treatment of the chronic degenerative diseases (Sport Therapy). He will know the preparticipation screening program in Italy for the eligibility in sports for the prevention of sudden death. Will know the causes of sudden death in sport and the role of ECG and echocardiographic examination to differentiate cardiac physiological adaptations from cardiac diseases

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry

Course unit content

The Course will deal with:
1) Outline of cardiac anatomy and physiology
2) Physical exercise prescription in chronic degenerative diseases in particular in hypertension (EFA, Adapted Physical Exercise).
3) Cardiac adaptations to physical exercise: the athlete's heart.
4) Prepartecipation screening program for eligibility in sports to prevent sudden death
5) Sudden death in the athlete: role of ECG and echocardiographic examination in the differential diagnosis between physiology and cardiac pathology

Teaching methods

Lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards,provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. Supporting material will be avaible on the specific,student-reserved platform (Elly) and will include slide presentations,audio-vido aids or video-recording of the lectures

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral examination.
In case of the persistence of the health emergency, the exams will be conducted remotely, as follows:
