Learning objectives

learn the basic techniques of ophthalmic surgery and the principles of operation and use of the main diagnostic tests under physiological conditions and in ophthalmic diseases and adnexa

At the end of the course, the student will be able to make the main diagnostic tests covered in this course, as well as to evaluate the indication for surgery in patients with eye diseases. .

Prerequisites

Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology of ocular elements

Course unit content

Discipline of Surgery - Prof. Stefano Gandolfi:
Cataract surgery: preoperative evaluation of the patient, introduction of techniques used for cataract extraction, the follow-up in the absence and presence of complications.
Glaucoma surgery: surgical indications, preoperative functional assessment, outline of surgical techniques used in the various types of glaucoma (ie, congenital, juvenile, adult, acute, refractory etc..), Follow-up of patients operated for trabeculectomy.
Corneal surgery: the penetrating keratoplasty (indications, preo postoperative evaluation with particular reference to the keratoconus patient, follow-up post-poperatorio), dell'ametropia myopic refractive surgery (indications, medico-legal aspects, outline of surgical techniques, follow-up).
Retinal surgery: the approach scleral buckling and vitrectomy (indications, risk / benefit ratio of each technique, orthotic complications of surgery for retinal detachment)
Strabismus surgery: general principles of strabismus surgery. Surgery on horizontal rectus muscles, Cyclovertical deviation surgery, Pre and post operative surgical semeiotics.
Eyelid surgery: surgical anatomy of the eyelids. Surgical semeiotics of eyelid malpositions, ptosis surgery, ectropion and entropion surgery. Eyelid retraction surgery.

Discipline of Semiotics - Prof. Paolo Mora:
The cycle of lessons is aimed to study the major pathological evidences of the retino-choroidal complex as they appeared in the instrumental investigations currently used in the Ophthalmology Unit of the A.O.U. of Parma. Particular attentintion will be paid to diabetic, hypertensive and occlusive retinopathies.

Teaching methods

During the lectures will be illustrated and discussed the content of the course.
The course will be supported by practical exercises and individual, in order to provide the opportunity for each student (a) to be able to measure in various clinical situations with the practical use of the main diagnostic tools discussed in a theoretical way during class and (b) witness the execution of surgeries performed on the eye and ocular adnexa.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of the achievement of the objectives set by the course includes an oral exam.
Through questions regarding the course content, it will be determined if the student has achieved the goal of knowledge and understanding of the content. Through questions concerning the principles of operation and interpretation of the main diagnostic tools covered in the course, will be determined whether the student has achieved the goal of applying the acquired knowledge.
