Integrated course unit module: GENERAL NURSING II

Learning objectives

The Applied Nursing Methodology course is part of the Integrated General Nursing Course II.
The course has the general objective of allowing the student to know and understand the cognitive, technical, interpersonal and ethical-legal skills necessary to implement the procedures for safe assistance based on evidence of effectiveness, available resources and preferences. of the assisted. The specific objectives can be broken down as follows: to make known the methodological phases of the nursing procedures addressed; provide the knowledge that allows highlighting the critical actions within each procedure; provide knowledge for the evaluation of best practice guidelines and available research-based evidence to support the procedure presented and, finally, provide knowledge to address any unexpected situations that may be encountered in clinical practice when applying a procedure

Course unit content

The course contents detailed below are developed starting from Gordon's functional models:
Activity and physical exercise model: detection of blood pressure and heart rate, execution of the electrocardiogram, detection of respiratory rate, detection of oxygen saturation, suction of the nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal airways, administration of oxygen therapy with low and high flow systems and aerosol therapy . Blood sampling.
Intestinal elimination model: performance of a low-level cleansing enema, collection of a stool sample for occult blood and coproculture, replacement, emptying and management of an ostomy device.
Urinary elimination model: positioning parrot, bedpan, external male catheter (condom), positioning and management of male and female bladder catheterization, removal of an indwelling bladder catheter, taking a urine culture test and replacing, emptying and management of a device for urostomy – intermittent catheterization.
Hygiene and self-care model: making the free and occupied bed, carrying out total body hygiene and partial hygiene. Mouth.

Furthermore, by applying the knowledge, understanding acquired and communication skills for the application of nursing procedures and guidelines, the student will have to demonstrate methodological rigor which includes: the definition, the initial assessments (including the influencing factors), the description of the material, the preparation of the environment, the preparation of the patient, the preparation of the operator, the different operational phases and the related scientific rationale, critical thinking and clinical reasoning, the final evaluations and recording methods, the understanding and the use of scientific evidence.
